Overview
The Security Unit Coordinator (Public Safety Coordinator) oversees all training, planning, and operational aspects of the Utah State University Police Department's Security personnel. In addition, the Security Unit Coordinator supervises Security Leads who assist in overall unit supervision of first line Security staff. The Security Unit focuses on assisting Utah State University community members, as well as monitors the property of USU.

This unit serves as a non-sworn extension of the services provided by the Utah State University Police Department. These duties include security functions for commercial and residential buildings, stadiums, arenas, museums, and other facilities. This role will set goals and performance expectations in harmony with Utah State University Police Department objectives. In association with departmental command staff, this position will create deadlines, organize workflow, ensure that employees understand their duties and designated tasks, monitor employee productivity, as well as provide feedback on employee performance. This position reports to the Police Lieutenant.


Responsibilities
  • Plan and direct all daily activities, functions and assignments for Security staff. Ensure applicable reports are completed timely and accurately.
  • Assign leadership responsibilities and delegate tasks to Security Lead personnel.
  • Assists with the hiring, training, planning, scheduling, assigning, monitoring, and evaluating the work of the Security staff.
  • Manage Security staff for Game Days and Campus Events.
  • Assists in scheduling, planning, logistics and security needs for special events.
  • Assign applicable facilities/properties for premises checks by Security staff and ensure applicable documentation is completed.
  • Monitor facility equipment (cameras) and put in work orders as needed.
  • Create and maintain a positive team work environment.
  • Develops a written, consistent, and all-inclusive training curriculum that is required to be signed by the one being trained and the trainer (oversee Security Field Training and continued In-Service Training hours).
  • Be a resource for regulations and University Policies.
  • Reviews present and future operational needs for the Security staff.
  • Reviews Security staff generated documents, forms, logs, and reports.
  • Guides, assists, monitors and counsels Security staff members to ensure they are performing within assigned expectations.
  • Maintain documentation for Security staff; including, schedules, directives, shift expectations, and other pertinent documents.
  • Cover Security staff shifts as needed and attend meetings as assigned.
  • Maintain coordination between Security Staff and the Dispatch Center Coordinator.
  • Manage and maintain equipment used by Security staff and report subsequent non- functionality.
  • Train, mentor, and develop personnel to increase their in-role effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Assess and approve subordinate staffs time sheets and leave requests.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Four years of experience in police services or five years of experience in an environmentally similar security field with one year of experience as a supervisor or an equivalent combination of education plus experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous law enforcement experience with supervisory oversight.
  • Experience in policing or security work in a Higher Education setting.
  • Personal knowledge of and experience with the USU Community.
  • Associates Degree or higher in a closely related field of study.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Skilled in the use of computers and law enforcement software programs.
  • Possess applicable related record maintenance skills.
  • Skilled in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems.
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to train and supervise employees; including, organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative and respectful work environment.
  • Possess employee development and performance management skills.
  • Exercise excellent communication skills, both up and down chain of command.
  • Ability to offer leadership to subordinate staff in field related areas.

Indoors, in an office space, event space, or public space are protected from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes. Incumbents often use repetitive hand motion (such as typing).

Outdoors, incumbents are not protected from weather conditions and may be exposed to extreme heat and extreme cold. Additionally, indoor or outdoor work environments may include being confined or in narrow spaces for periods of time. The incumbent may also be exposed to loud noises, vibrations, from equipment, and conditions that may affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation. Bending, crawling, and crouching may be required. Incumbents may be required to lift, push, and/or pull objects around 50 pounds and be required to walk and/or stand for long periods of time. Incumbents nearly continuously listen, hear, and talk.
